The first author, Dr. Nana de Graaff is Associate Professor in International Relations at the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. De Graaff is Chair of the EU COST Action 18215 China in Europe Research Network; Executive Council Member of SASE (Society for the Advancement of Socio-Economics) and International Advisory Board member of International Affairs (Oxford University Press/Chatham House). She was a Honorary Fellow (2016-2017), at the Department of International Politics, City University of London and is boardmember of the Dutch Political Science Association (NKWP, Nederlandse Kring voor de Wetenschap der Politiek) since 2015. The second author, Dr. Tobias ten Brink, is Professor of Chinese Economy and Society. He also serves as Director, China Global Center at Jacobs University, Social Sciences & Humanities. The third is Professor Inderjeet Parmar. Dr. Parmar read Sociology at the London School of Economics, and Political Sociology at the University of London. His doctorate, from the University of Manchester, was in the fields of political science and international relations. Prior to appointment at City, University of London in 2012, he taught at the University of Manchester (1991-2012), mainly in its Department of Government which, between 2006-09, he served as Head of Department.

590. George Washington and China

In 1789, when Washington was elected as the first president of the US , he fully stated the significance of the trade to his still-young country. He told the Marquis de Lafayette that the national revenues had been considerably more productive than had been imagined they would be because of the China trade. He then listed some examples: "A single vessel just arrived in this port pays $30,000 to government. Two vessels fitted out for the fur trade to the northwest coast of America have succeeded well. The whole outfits of vessels and cargoes cost but $7,000. One is returning home loaded with India produce, the other going back to the coast of America; and they have deposited $100,000 of their profits in China." Since 1784, the value of American trade with China increased greatly. In 1790, it was estimated that trade with China accounted for about one seventh of US imported goods. By 1792, the value of the American trade with China had surpassed that of Holland, France and Denmark, and was second only to Great Britain, which had had established commercial relations with China for over 100 years. In 1840, American business with China amounted to nearly US$75 million, a sum greater than the total debt of the American Revolution. Trade with China helped revitalize the US and port cities like Salem, New York and Boston hugely benefited from it. The trade brought back hard money that capitalized new industry. Factory towns sprang up, and Americans began to experiment with the techniques of mass production. Soon the groundwork had been laid for the greatest industrial expansion the world had seen.

585. Dr. Dave Wang's Article Discussed at European Forum on US and China Relations

In January 2020 in Amsterdam, Holland, the International Forum, China's Rise in a Liberal World Order in Transition was held. Dr. Nana de Graaff, an Associate Professor of Political Science in the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam wrote an introduction to the Forum. In his review article, Dr. Dave Wang's paper, "Confucius in American Founding: The Founders' Efforts to Use Confucian Moral Philosophy to Create New Virtue for the New Nation, Virginia Review of Asian Studies,  vol. 16, 2015, 11-26.

It is widely know that the United States sent envoys to China to advance American interests. However not much academic research has been done about these first envoys until now. The author of the book, Mr. Eicher, is a  retired U.S. Foreign Service officer who served in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and the Pacific. In this book, he "profiles the characters who influenced the formative period of American diplomacy and the first steps the United States took as a world power."

581. Confucian Influence on the United States

With this post I would like to show that impact of Dr. Dave Wang's examination of Confucian influence on the United States. Below is the snapshot from the Google search. The first one, Confucius and Benjamin Franklin, is my article based on my speech at the academic conference in New York in April 2017. Next is that The Routledge Companion to Transnational American Studies,  a valuable reference book for students in American studies worldwide, quotes my academic articles. The third is that, China Through American Eyes: Early Depictions of the Chinese Culture and People in the U.S. Print Media, by Dr. Zhang Wenxin,  a well-know scholar in the  field of Chinese-American cultural history cites my research paper. Number 4 is my research was discussed in the book, Narrative Inquiries from Fulbright Lecturers in China Cross-cultural Connections in Higher Education, published in 2019. The fifth is that my paper, Benjamin Franklin and China published by the official website of the committee, which the former President George Bush Jr. served as honorary chairman. The committee was formed in honor the 300 anniversary of birth of  Benjamin Franklin, one of great founders of the United States. The last one is that my article From Confucius to the Great Wall: Chinese Cultural Influence on the United States, published by Japan academic journal, is based on my speech at Kokushikan University in 2010. 

580. Founders and Chinese Teas

We have learned that all founders of the United States loved Chinse tea, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams and Benjamin Franklin. George Washington loved Chinse tea for his entire life. As a bachelor, George Washington had beautiful tea sets made from China. John Adams and John Quincy Adams were both avid tea lovers. George Washington liked Black Tea. He had three cups of tea in the days when he and his soldiers spent hard time in the Valley Forge. According to a resources,  Thomas Jefferson was a fan of green tea, presumably produced in the Anhui province of China. Paul Revere made silver tea pots.

I have found that Dr. Dave Wang's academic articles have been adopted as teaching texts by some universities and colleges at home and abroad. Certain high schools have also used Dr. Wang's research papers as teaching materials. Below is the snapshot of the content page of Education About Asia, published by the Association for Asian Studies. Dr. Dave Wang's article is the first one in the group of articles about the United States' connection with Asia. Dr. Wang's research results have helped us to understand further the cultural origins of this nation in addition to European thoughts of the Enlightenment Age. With great insight, the founders made their great efforts to borrow all positive factors from other civilization, including Chinese civilization. This is one of the reasons that make the United States a great nation in the world.

With this post I present my readers with three snapshots demonstrating that the influence of Dr. Dave Wang's study of Chinese cultural impact on the west and the United States in particular. According to its website, the aim of the Asia Orient Institute, founded in 2013, is to strengthen Asian research and teaching at the University of Zurich. By combining the five subjects of Indology, Islamic Studies, Japanese Studies, Sinology and Gender Studies in a common institute structure, Zurich's focus on Asia within and outside the university should become even more visible.
